St Matthew’s is a designated school of special Anglican character under the New Zealand Education Act. Based around the Christian values of the Anglican Church, this special character is the heart of the school and pervades everything we do.

In an increasingly secular world, St Matthew’s Special Character stands for:

  • Respect for others
  • Good manners
  • Love that doesn’t expect anything in return
  • Encouraging girls to connect with something greater than and beyond themselves

Under the Anglican values of Faith, Service and Sacrifice we have five other Values which as a school community which we have identified as of particular importance:

  • Compassion
  • Integrity
  • Respect
  • Inclusiveness
  • Commitment

Students and staff are part of a family which participates together in all school activities – academic, sporting, cultural and spiritual. Our special character is evident in how staff and students relate to each other in the classroom. It is why our day girls, boarders and staff have lunch together every day. It is why all girls have a chance once a week to stop and think in the stillness and peace of a chapel service. It is why they actively support annual appeals to help people in need around the world. The Special Character is what makes St Matthew’s special.
